Week 1 Highlights: Media Fellowship on Occupational Health

The Media Fellowship on Occupational Health (MFOH) officially launched on 14 March 2026, bringing together a dynamic group of fellows and tutors for an engaging opening session focused on connection and collaboration. The session began with introductions, where participants shared their professional backgrounds, interests, and expectations. This created an open and supportive learning environment, setting a strong foundation for the weeks ahead.
The first technical session, led by Dr. Omer El Nagieb, introduced fellows to the fundamentals of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS). The session explored key concepts such as the scope of occupational health, the global and regional burden of occupational diseases, and the critical distinction between hazards and risks. It also provided important insights into workplace health challenges across Africa.
In the second session, Roaa Elhag highlighted the vital link between occupational health and media reporting. Using the example of women working in Sudanese mining, the discussion underscored how journalism can bring attention to underreported workplace risks and contribute to improved awareness and safer working conditions.
Overall, the first day set a powerful tone for the fellowship, blending technical knowledge with practical media applications. Fellows were encouraged to think critically about how occupational health stories can be identified, researched, and effectively communicated to drive impact.
