The Centre for Occupational and Environmental Health Africa (COEHA) recently hosted a webinar titled “Safeguarding Our Frontline: Health and Wellbeing of Healthcare Workers in Africa.” The event brought together esteemed experts and frontline healthcare workers to discuss critical issues and share strategies for improving the health and safety of those who tirelessly serve our communities.

Honoring Our Heroes:

The webinar began with a heartfelt tribute to healthcare workers who have tragically lost their lives while serving on the frontlines. Their dedication and sacrifice were acknowledged, and their contributions to the healthcare sector were deeply honored.

  • Dr Dorothy Ngajilo
    Occupational Medicine Specialist, World Health Organization (WHO)
    Dr Ngajilo delivered the keynote speech, addressing the overarching challenges and opportunities in promoting the health and well-being of healthcare workers across Africa.
  • Dr Laurence Boaky
    Senior Consultant Occupational Physician
    Dr Boaky shared insights into managing exposure injuries among healthcare workers, drawing from his extensive experience as a consultant in the UK.
  • Dr Omer Elawad
    Researcher from Sudan
    Dr Elawad presented groundbreaking research on the alarming rates of sudden death among doctors in Sudan, shedding light on the mental health crisis facing healthcare professionals.

The diverse panel explored comprehensive policy frameworks, robust support systems, and actionable strategies to enhance the welfare of healthcare workers. The discussion integrated global experiences, from managing exposure injuries and supporting frontline workers during conflicts to addressing burnout and sudden death.
