Roundtable on Security-Development Nexus in ASGM – Paris, France

This roundtable discussion was organised by Resolve as a side event of OECD Forum on Responsible Mineral Supply Chains which was held in Paris between the 21st-24th. of may 2024.
meeting commenced with a welcome and an overview of the objectives and agenda by RESOLVE. An opening statement was made by a representative from the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs (OES). The session aimed to highlight the necessity of coordination across the Artisanal and Small-scale Gold Mining (ASGM) sector’s security-development nexus.

COEHA participated in the session on Development-related Linkages in ASGM’s Security-Development Nexus. Our contribution explored the developmental aspects linked to ASGM’s security-development nexus. Key insights were shared on the occupational health, socioeconomic development, and environmental outcomes associated with ASGM, identifying existing coordination gaps and potential opportunities for improvement. The session included presentations from:

• SWISSAID


The outcome of the discussions focused on identifying concrete options for optimizing development and security synergies within the ASGM sector. The discussions highlighted practical elements for convergent programming, a framework for integrating siloed engagements, modes of action, and an initiative to test a coordination model on the ground.
