Towards an ASM Continental Strategy: A Consultative Workshop Organized by the African Mineral Development Centre (AMDC)

The African Minerals Development Centre (AMDC) hosted the East and Southern Africa Regional Consultative Workshop for a Continental Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining (ASM) Strategy in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the ACP-EU Minerals Development Programme, in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania between 26-28 April 2024.
The workshop brought together ASM stakeholders from Eastern and Southern Africa including government agencies, miners’ leaders – with a strong presence of” Women in Mining “ organizations in the two regions and mining communities’ leaders.
Dr Omer El Nagieb COEHA Chief Medical Officer highlighted the important role that occupational health can play in the formalization of the sector; its governance and the realization of “Africa Mining Vision”.
Dr El Nagieb stated, “I am delighted to see that the health of ASM miners and their communities was the focus of extensive discussions in the workshop and that OH has featured prominently in the draft strategy.”
