The COEHA Postgraduate Certificate in Occupational Medicine (PGCert OM) has made an excellent start, with participants completing the first two modules of the programme during its opening two months.

Participants have completed Module 1: Principles and Practice of Occupational Medicine and Module 2: Work-Related Diseases, establishing a strong foundation for the clinical and workplace-based components of their occupational medicine training.

The programme places particular emphasis on applying knowledge to real occupational health practice. Participants have been developing skills in occupational health consultation, fitness-for-work assessment, recognition of workplace hazards and work-related diseases, and the preparation of clear, evidence-based occupational health reports.

A major focus during the first two months has also been the development of participants’ professional portfolios. Through Workplace Visit and Occupational Health Consultation assignments, participants have had opportunities to apply their learning to practical situations, reflect on their practice and demonstrate developing competence.

Expert faculty guidance, tutorials and personalised feedback have supported participants throughout this process, helping them identify areas of strength as well as opportunities for further development.

The portfolio is an important component of occupational medicine training and supports participants in documenting their developing clinical and professional competencies while preparing for future professional assessments, including LFOM/MFOM pathways.

As the cohort moves into the next stage of the programme, the emphasis will continue to be on combining academic knowledge with practical occupational health skills relevant to workplaces across Africa and internationally.
